Wentworth Youth Centre prepares for June applications

The Wentworth Youth Development Centre offers disadvantaged youth the opportunity to study a course in becoming an electrical assistant, a chef assistant or a sewing/fashion designer.

THE Wentworth Youth Development Centre is excited to announce that applications for their June intake of students are now open.

Located on The Bluff, the centre successfully concluded its first intake in January and is now inviting applications for the final set of students for the year. Since its establishment in October 2021, the centre has served as a beacon of hope and transformation for the local youth community, offering free courses.

Celeste King, chairperson of eThekwini South Youth in Business, describes the centre as a skill hub catering to the needs of all young people. The organisation is run by eThekwini South Youth in Business and funded by the Department of Social Development.

“The centre offers courses for an electrical assistant, chef assistant and sewing/fashion designer. To enrol in the electrical course, you need a minimum of Grade 12; for the chef assistant course, you need a Grade 10 pass, and for the sewing/fashion design course, you need a Grade Nine pass. Additionally, all courses are accompanied by a basic computer course. The courses run between three to four months and are accredited with eThekwini TVET College. Once complete, a graduation ceremony will be held,” said King.

Charlene Fisher, a recent graduate of the chef assistant course, praises the centre for opening doors to opportunities she once thought were inaccessible. She is currently undertaking a computer course.

“I have such a passion for cooking, and to be able to do this course has been such a journey. It really has reignited my desire to study further and be able to get to where I want to be one day, and that is opening up my own food business. I would encourage everyone to apply and to do a course because it really has given me a newfound opportunity to grow and achieve my goals,” said Fisher.

In addition to course completion, the centre supports aspiring entrepreneurs by providing funding through the National Youth Development Agency for starter packs. For those seeking traditional employment, assistance with job hunting is also available.

With a limit of 20 students per class, interested individuals are urged to apply early. For further details or to submit an application, please contact Siyanda Dlamini at 060 661 8677.
