Meals on Wheels puts love into action

Meals on Wheels ensured schoolchildren had full tummies and those walking to Wentworth Hospital in the scorching heat could rest and have a refreshment and a meal.

IN a heartwarming demonstration of compassion, Meals on Wheels, a local organisation renowned for its work in the community, extended its services to distribute meals to schoolchildren in need. Additionally, they generously offered hot meals and refreshing juice to patients en route to Wentworth Hospital at the 7th Day Adventist Church in Wentworth on February 14.

The day kicked off with a dedicated team of Meals on Wheels volunteers bustling around the kitchen as they prepared hotdogs for delivery to local schools, ensuring that children without lunch were provided with nourishment. Theresa Saber, the branch manager of Meals on Wheels in Wentworth, explained that they routinely distribute lunches to schools every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

“Schools normally do a special civvies day and sell Valentine’s Day-themed goodies, and we knew that some people won’t be able to buy anything, so that was why we decided to spoil the children with hotdogs,” said Theresa.

In addition to delivering lunches, the volunteers also supplied schools with loaves of bread and a variety of fillings, which change weekly based on their inventory. These ingredients enable the schools to prepare lunches for the children on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Simultaneously, volunteers worked diligently to prepare hot meals and serve cold juice to individuals visiting Wentworth Hospital. Located uphill from the church where Meals on Wheels operates, the journey to the hospital can be daunting, especially for residents, including the elderly.

Theresa said, “The scorching sun made the situation more difficult as everyone was struggling to walk up the hill in the heat. We offered anyone a chance to come and rest and have a cool glass of juice and a container of dhall and rice, so they could re-energise before continuing their walk.”

Theresa mentioned that this initiative is about more than food and is about love for people and doing our bit for God and our community. She added that it is all about putting love into action. Meals on Wheels has been in existence since 1970 and has solely depended on the donations of the community to provide so many people with meals.
