Brighton Beach SAPS organises Back to School Safety Programme for Grade Eights

The programme is aimed to prepare Grade Eights for the transition to high school.

CAPTAIN Louise Le Roux, communications officer for SAPS Brighton Beach, spearheaded the annual Grade Eight Crime Induction Programme at Grosvenor Girls’ High School on January 19 as part of the SAPS Back to School Safety Programme.

The programme’s central aim is to empower Grade Eight learners by imparting knowledge about their rights in the educational setting, nurturing an understanding of their peers’ rights and responsibilities.

Beyond providing learners with essential coping skills for the transition from senior primary to high school, the initiative addresses the challenges associated with adapting to a new educational environment, including adjusting to new teachers, rules and increased workloads that may induce anxiety.

Le Roux outlined the various facets covered in the presentation, which encompass criminal capacity, child protection, the Dangerous Weapons Act, underage drinking and substance dependency.

Moreover, the programme emphasises the responsible use of mobile devices in alignment with the school’s code of conduct, underscoring their potential role in criminal activities and the dissemination of pornographic material.

Participants in the programme received informational guides on school bullying and the detrimental effects of drugs. These guides include contact details for support organisations, prominently featuring the Childline Toll-Free help.

Through collaborative efforts with educational institutions, SAPS remains dedicated to establishing safer school environments and cultivating a sense of security within the learning space.
