Ward 66 residents plagued by mosquito infestation

Mosquitoes are breeding in standing wastewater which has led to a massive infestation on The Bluff.

ACCORDING to Ward 66 councillor Zoë Solomon, there have been a large number of complaints about an influx of mosquitoes in the Crossway area of The Bluff.

Residents have helped identify the zone in which the mosquitoes are being bred as the valley between the Blackpool and Netford roads. Solomon also revealed that the core problem stems from an issue with the nearby pump house, which lies within the valley.

“The ongoing issue of sewerage infrastructure and breakdown of the pumps in the Crossway area has contributed to the contamination of water bodies in the bush between the Blackpool and Netford roads, on the ocean side of Marine Drive.”

Kalman Porritt, a long-time resident of the Crossway area, has his house situated adjacent to the alleged affected area. It was mentioned by Porritt that, apart from the influx of mosquitoes being bred, the stench of the sewage is sickening.

“I can’t open the window; I am only able to open the doors when I need to feed the pets and allow them to do their business or when I leave. This poses a problem for my dog as I’m not sure how this stench of sewage or the pesticide affect him. I am lucky I have aircons, but I still get disturbed by the mosquitoes and stench, no matter where I am in the house or what time of day it is.”

Kevin Govender, a resident in the Crossway area, said that he is filling his home with pesticides, trying to get rid of the mosquitoes. Govender also mentioned that these toxins are causing allergic reactions to their skin. He also shared that his father-in-law, who takes blood thinners, comes over once a month to stay.

The area is no stranger to foul stenches, according to Porritt as it has, apparently, been an ongoing issue they’ve always had, going back four to five years ago. He explained that the mosquitoes and sewage had never been this bad before.

Solomon did reveal that the vector sector of the City’s health department has been notified regarding the mosquito infestation. She noted that the sewerage issue is where the actual problem lies, and she said that the pump houses throughout The Bluff are experiencing similar issues.
