Wentworth musician takes listeners on a journey of love through his latest single

Luke Robertson honed his skill for producing music by using an application on his phone.

INDEPENDENT music artist Luke Robertson, who recently released his second single, If Only for One Night, is hoping to conquer both the local and international industry in future.

The 23-year-old of Wentworth said the song tells the story of not wanting to lose the person you love and pleading for even just one more night with them to feel that love once again.

“As the song progresses, both the vocals and instruments grow in intensity to emulate the growing desperation of the story, until finally, it ends in a symphony of lush harmonies and epic instrumentation.

“The response to my song has been amazing in terms of streams. I have also received a few messages from people in South Africa and abroad telling me how they loved the song, that it has inspired them, and wishing me well on my musical journey, which means the world to me as an artist. I have also entered it into the International Songwriting Competition, and the winners will be announced in 2024,” he said.

Robertson, who is also a songwriter and producer, said his musical journey began at a young age.

“I used to beg my mother to sing alongside her in church. I also loved to sing at home and with my cousins. But it wasn’t until primary school that I started taking an interest in writing songs.

“When I was about eight years old, I began piano lessons, and I wrote my first song. I still remember the melody and lyrics so clearly. Throughout my schooling years, I took part in the choir and performed at many musical events, either singing or playing the piano, or both. I was also in the eThekwini Youth Choir,” he said.

Robertson said that in 2019, he moved to Johannesburg and started making music using an application on his phone, GarageBand, to pass the time.

“I would sit for hours using my ear to isolate and recreate the instruments of songs that I liked, as a sort of game, until it eventually sounded close enough to the actual song. Over time, my skill for producing developed, and then I started to get ideas for my own songs and began creating them on my phone.

“After some encouragement from friends and family, I decided that I would save money and contact a producer to finally make my dream a reality by recording my own songs. I contacted an extremely talented producer, Paul Stainbank, whom I worked with to recreate the demos from my phone on his professional equipment, and the rest is history,” he said.

Robertson, who completed his final year BCom Degree in Business Management this year, said some of his challenges were learning how to manage his music career and navigate the industry as an independent artist while being a full-time student.

“But I have been fortunate enough to have been mentored by an incredibly talented and successful singer, songwriter and performer, Brendon Mendes, who also has his roots in Wentworth. He is a huge inspiration to me. Together with his guidance and prayer, and the help of my family and friends, I’ve been able to overcome the many challenges I’ve faced,” he said.

Robertson said his goal is to build a successful career in music.

“I want to conquer both local and international stages and hope to, one day, reach the level of those I look up to as an artist. I would also like to, one day, provide a platform for aspiring musicians in my community to explore their talents and pursue their passion like I am fortunate enough to be able to do,” he said.

Robertson said his message to aspiring artists was to follow their passion and not to give up.

“There will be times when you feel like nothing is working out, but if you know in your heart that this is what you are meant to do, have faith and push on,” he said.

Robertson’s single is available on various streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer and JOOX, among others.
