Durban SPCA aims to raise much-needed funds through newly launched vegetable garden

The SPCA hopes that the community will show their support by buying fresh produce from the animal organisation.

THE Durban & Coast SPCA have officially launched their own vegetable garden with delicious and fresh organic produce on offer to the public.

Tanya Fleischer, the SPCA’s marketing manager, said, “We are going green, not just for the Bokke but for the love of our planet. In an effort to help create a sustainable future for our SPCA, as well as being conscious about the environment, we took a leap of faith in June this year and started a small vegetable garden under the guidance of our general manager, Caroline Smith, and our staff member, Lesley du Toit, who has been growing his own vegetables at home.

“Since then, we have harvested spinach, broccoli, lettuce and butternut, to name a few, on a small scale while the project took flight.

“In addition, we have also started to produce gorgeous planter boxes, which can be made to your specifications in terms of design, size and colour. We also have flowers and seedlings available to purchase daily,” she said.

Fleischer said they are now calling on the public to support them.

“We hope that this project grows, literally, from strength to strength and that the public will assist by purchasing these items from us in order to help us continue to raise much-needed funds for the animals in our care,” she said.

Du Toit added, “I love gardening, and this has been such an awesome project to work on. We started in June, and we have already harvested vegetables. When our general manager outlined her vision for this project, I was only too happy to oversee it.”

The vegetables will be available for purchase at the SPCA’s premises situated at 2 Willowfield Crescent, Springfield Park, every Saturday between 08:00 and 12:00.

The SPCA is also appealing for donations of seedlings, seeds or plants, and for the assistance of anyone with green fingers who is keen to help them in the garden. For more information or to assist, call Mary on 031 579 6535 or email mary@spcadbn.org.za.
