Heartfelt donation equips special needs learners in Umlazi

The initiative was in support of the school's recently inaugurated Food Production Unit, which provides catering and hospitality skills to intellectually impaired learners.

GENEROUS donors from Engen gifted learners with disabilities new equipment, which is needed to launch a Food Production Unit aimed at offering hospitality skills to intellectually impaired learners.

The Umlazi-based Mason Lincoln Special School caters for people living with disabilities. The official handover took place on October 18 at the school.

Members of the South Durban Community-Engen Joint Committee and Engen staff generously donated towards the hospitality unit to increase their support to persons living with disabilities.

The donations consisted of essential items and furniture and tableware, including 50 children’s plastic chairs, 50 adult chairs, 10 plastic foldable tables, 100 plastic plates, 100 plastic mugs and 100 plastic cereal bowls.

The initiative was in support of the school’s recently inaugurated Food Production Unit, which provides catering and hospitality skills to intellectually impaired learners.

The principal of the school, Happy Shoba-Morolong, expressed deep gratitude for Engen’s ongoing support, emphasising its positive impact on the school’s new Food Production Unit.

Engen also recently donated a specialist ultrasound machine, TheraBand exercise stability balls and stationery packs for 330 learners, which include persons who are physically challenged, visually impaired, autistic, intellectually impaired (mild), those who epileptic, and learners with albinism.

Dr James Xolani Nyawera, Engen’s head of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement, said, “As a caring and inclusive company with heart, this aligns with Engen’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which strive to ensure a better and more sustainable future for all.

“Engen advocates for the creation of an equitable society where persons with disabilities can access every sphere of education, work and social life, forging a future inclusive of all people.”

Founded in 1943, Mason Lincoln Special School caters to learners with physical and intellectual disabilities from grades R to 12.
