Foundation provides disaster management training for search and rescue team [Video]

The medical training provided will enable those involved in rescue operations to better assist injured patients.

AIMED at equipping the Renegades Search and Rescue team with the necessary skills to deal with different situations they may encounter, the Mediskills Healthcare Foundation, a non-profit organisation, recently hosted a disaster management training programme.

Sister Allison Andrew, the founder and chairperson of the foundation, said the objective of the programme was to provide the rescuers with various training, such as first aid and full cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), among others.

“We wanted them to be prepared for any situation they may encounter during a search. We also equipped them with knowledge so we had experts, such as firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement, speak to them about what to do when faced with various situations and also what they can and cannot do.

“We also spoke to them about the importance of taking care of their mental health as it can be impacted, especially when dealing with sensitive situations which, at times, involve children. We spoke to them about the importance of caring for their well-being so they can give back.

“I also saw providing the training as my way of giving back to those who volunteer their time to help families find their loved ones and help bring them closure,” she said.

Dawn Gounden, Renegades Search and Rescue spokesperson, said disaster management training is vital in search and rescue.

She said their role as rescuers is to find missing persons, wanted persons and persons of interest, as well as to assist against the trafficking of persons and during natural disasters.

“It is imperative that members work with safety methods, knowledge and understanding. The training enables members to analyse the situation before administering assistance and provides basic medical training.

“Furthermore, such training gives members a broader spectrum of understanding the dangers of disasters, while having a strategic plan in place, which will aid in more lives being saved than lost.

“Having such knowledge through the training grants members the opportunity to work with wisdom and educate communities. This will also enable the communities to utilise safety measures and work in unison to protect themselves, their families and the community,” she said.
