Support for deaf victims of gender-based violence

The focus of the workshop was to assist the deaf community and enhance support for gender-based violence survivors.

THE founder of the Wentworth-based support group and non-profit organisation, BAFDT, facilitated a workshop on how to start support groups for deaf assistant teachers from various communities.

The workshop was held at the KwaZulu-Natal Deaf Association. Founder of BAFDT Audrey Anderson said the focus of the workshop was to assist the deaf community and to enhance support for deaf gender-based violence survivors, as well as to help create a safe space for survivors to get help and open up about issues affecting them.

“It was an honour to facilitate the support-group workshop, and working with the deaf community was a learning and sharing experience. I thank those who afforded me this opportunity to share and empower the assistant teachers.

“Together, we aim to create a safer space and equip victims of gender-based violence and femicide on how to go from victim to survivor.

“BAFDT is proud to be associated with this workshop, and we hope to change many lives through this initiative,” Anderson said.
