Angry residents set shooter’s car alight in Wentworth

An argument that started at a nightclub turned into a shooting spree in Pascal Road.

TIRED of rampant shootings, Wentworth residents torched the car of a man who went on a shooting rampage at the wrong house after a fight at a club and shot two people in the early hours of October 1.

The 30-year-old man was arrested by Wentworth detectives a day after the shooting while he appeared at the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court for a ‘malicious damage to property’ case which he is out on bail for.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson Captain Mbuso Gumede, an argument started at a nightclub in Wentworth between two women. Their boyfriends also started to argue with each other, and a fight ensued.

“After the fight was broken up, all people involved, who were together at the venue and involved in the fight, were removed from the venue. A few minutes later, gunshots rang out on Pascal Road.

“One of the men involved in the fight went on a shooting rampage, but had gone to the wrong house and shot at the wrong people. He had assumed that this was where the people he had been fighting with at the club lived. Luckily, nobody was injured during the shooting at the wrong house.

“When he eventually spotted the people he was looking for at the neighbouring home, he jumped out of his car and chased them into the house. He fired shots through the kitchen door and entered the home through the same door.

“He fired shots towards one of the men that he was fighting with at the club. The bullet grazed the man’s head. There was another man in the home, and he was also grazed by the same bullet on the chin. Although he ran out of bullets, the suspect still tried to shoot. He then ran out of the house but was chased by the man he had shot.

“They fought again, and the arm of the man who was shot was broken during the fight. The man passed out outside his house. When the shooter tried to start his car to flee, the car did not start. The community got hold of him, but he managed to free himself and escaped from them. The community then set his car alight in Pascal Road,” Gumede added.

Gumede said both men who were shot were rushed to Wentworth Hospital for treatment.

The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on October 4, where the state opposed bail. He was charged with two counts of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

The matter was remanded for a formal bail application.
