Drugs, money and unlicensed gun found on suspects in Wentworth drug den

Both the suspects have appeared in court and were due to re-appear on October 11.

POLICE have heightened their patrols and clamped down on a drug hotspot in Wentworth, where a teenager and a man were arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and dealing in drugs.

The duo were found in a notorious drug den in Woodville Road flats on October 5.

According to spokesperson of the Wentworth Police Station Captain Mbuso Gumede, members of the Vispol team were patrolling the area when they received information that there were drug activities in a known drug hotspot.”

Thirty-one red-and-white capsules suspected to contain heroin and cash in notes from the 26-year-old man.

“On arrival, police arrested two suspects after searching the premises. The officers were assisted by two private security officers and conducted a search on both suspects,” Gumede added.

Police seized a Norinco silver 9mm pistol, four live 9mm Luger ammunitions from the 19-year-old man and 31 red-and-white capsules suspected of containing heroin, plus cash in notes from the 26-year-old man. The firearm serial number was filed off and will be sent to Ballistics to establish if it was used to commit other crimes. Both accused were arrested and charged.

The 19-year-old suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on October 5 and was remanded into police custody at Westville Prison for seven days. He was due to re-appear in court on October 11.

The 26-year-old suspect appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court and was also remanded into police custody at Westville Prison. He was due to re-appear in court on October 11.

Station commander of the Wentworth Police Station Colonel Sinayo Mtshali commended the arresting officers.
