Newly launched youth league pledges to uplift community

An outdoor movie night and drumming circle are some of the activities that the youth can look forward to.

THE Merewent Community Policing Forum recently launched their youth league, which aims to provide youth with various alternative recreational activities and opportunities.

The enthusiastic group of youth volunteers took a pledge to serve their community at a family fun and sports day which they organised to launch the youth league at Alipore Primary School, recently.

After the pledge, a 5-a-side soccer tournament was held, where talented soccer players from teams in Merebank, Wentworth and Lamontville, battled it out for the win.

Entry into the competition was free, and a talent show held at the stage area showcased some of the hidden talents in south Durban.

Nine teams won medals, trophies and gifts, and a host of prizes and gifts were won by attendees for participating in the exciting event.

First elected chairperson of the youth league, Smitha Deonath, said, “We will aim to give youth opportunities to embark on outdoor activities instead of remaining indoors and being hooked on video games and the television.

“We believe that by helping youngsters get off the streets, we can keep them away from crime and substance abuse.”

MCF chairperson Premilla Deonath said, “The youth league will transcend barriers of gender, race, culture, religion, political affiliation and other perceived differences. Different-abled youth are invited to join us,” said Deonath.

Residents can look forward to outdoor movie nights where families can take along their cushions, picnic baskets and blankets and watch a movie under the stars.

Plans in the pipeline include a leadership course to be held in the Drakensberg, as well as a monthly drumming circle accompanied by a bonfire for the youth to sit around where they can share their challenges and dreams.

The initiative is also aimed at garnering support and help from those around them who have experience in certain matters. Djembe drums and acoustic instruments will help break the ice.

“We want to help the youth access their unemployment insurance funds if they have worked before or the R350 grants. We will also be providing free tuition and hosting regular talent competitions.

“Fun indoor games like murder mysteries, trivial pursuit, chess and other exciting board games will also be included in our programmes. We want to teach youngsters the importance of voting and civic responsibility, as well as volunteering.

“We will also assist with employment opportunities,” Deonath added.

They have assisted with providing skills to help youth open their own businesses and have also regularly provided youth with access to free certified courses in software development, project management, data analysis and business analysis.
