WATCH: Yellowwood Park author receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Mala Lutchmanan also did broadcasting on radio, at Lotus FM.

HAVING made outstanding contributions to the language, literature, and cultural sectors in the country, Mala Lutchmanan, was recognised for her efforts with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, at this year’s Durban International Book Fair.

Lutchmanan, 60, who resides in Yellowwood Park, has added several notches to her belt which include a dedicated Tamil scholar, author, teacher (newly-retired), and broadcaster over the years.

Anivesh Singh, co-founder and director of the Durban Book Fair, said with an unwavering dedication and passion for her work, Lutchmanan has played a significant role in preserving and promoting the richness of the Tamil language, both in South Africa and internationally.

He said Lutchmanan, who was born and raised in the Magazine Barracks, a municipal workers’ labour compound in Durban, was exposed to the beauty and intricacies of the Tamil language from an early age.

“Her parents, who were ardent supporters of the Tamil culture, instilled in her a deep love and appreciation for the language, encouraging her to explore its vast literary heritage. As she grew older, her natural curiosity and intellectual prowess led her to pursue further education in the field of Tamil literature thanks to a scholarship to the world renowned Thanjavur University in India. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree, Lutchmanan found her calling as a teacher in England and in South Africa,” said Singh.

He said during her teaching career she shared her expertise and inspired countless students to develop a deeper connection with English and Tamil literature.

Singh said in addition, it was during her time in India that Lutchmanan started to explore her writing skills, as she grappled with the idea of preserving Tamil literature for future generations and making the literature of both countries more accessible.

Her published works include Valliamma – child soldier of South Africa’s liberation struggle, a series of children’s books, an IsiZulu translation of the Thirukkural and a Tamil translation of Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom.

“Her books have received widespread praise for their meticulous research, eloquent writing style, and valuable insights both literary and political,” said Singh.

He added Lutchmanan’s passion for literature seamlessly transitioned into the realm of broadcasting when she joined the popular South African radio station, Lotus FM.

“With her welcoming and soothing voice, she has captivated listeners for almost 30 years, regaling them with tales from the Tamil literature, playing music, discussing cultural events, and hosting interviews with Tamil scholars and artists. She also effortlessly bridged the gap between generations, ensuring that the Tamil language and culture remains vibrant and relevant to a wider audience.

“Lutchmanan has become a beacon of inspiration, embodying the true essence of a passionate scholar and cultural ambassador. The Durban International Book Fair is delighted to recognise her work with a Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Singh.

Lutchmanan said she greatly appreciated the acknowledgment and felt very humbled.
