Wentworth woman sentenced to 10 years for robbing teen

The 32-year-old was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

A WENTWORTH woman, who robbed a teenager of her cellphone, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the Durban Regional Court recently.

The 32-year-old was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, Wentworth police spokesperson, said the woman, who was armed with a knife, approached two girls, aged 13 and 15, who were walking in a pathway in Cycas Road, on December 10, 2022.

“The woman who had followed them, produced a knife and held it against one of the victims, demanding she hand over her cellphone. The victim tried to run, but the woman caught her and grabbed her phone.

“The second victim also fled, but the woman chased her and threatened her with the knife and demanded she hand over her cellphone. However, she did not have it in her possession. The woman was later apprehended at a sports ground,” he said.

Gumede said the station commended Detective Sergeant Simphiwe Mhlongo for his sterling investigation and securing a conviction.

Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, Wentworth police station commander, added that the police will not hesitate to arrest suspects who prey on innocent people and deprive them of their property.

“It must be noted that heavy sentences will be imposed on those perpetrators,” she said.
