WATCH: Wentworth families illegally occupy temporary housing area

The families said they were aware they are illegally occupying the area and will await a visit from authorities.

DESTITUTE families, who have been trapped in the cycle of cramped living, homelessness and unemployment, have illegally occupied the temporary houses in Alabama Road, in Wentworth, and have vowed not to leave.

The 12 houses were built in 2014 for decanting and used as a temporary housing area for residents from the flats areas whose homes were being refurbished.

The area was left without a fence or a guard for over a year, and the residents who have illegally occupied it said they have cleared the homes of the rubbish left by drug addicts, who use the area as a hideout. They said they will make the area their new home until the government provides them with proper housing.

The families met with community leaders in the area which was illegally occupied.

The frustrated group of about 50 adults and children moved into the dilapidating housing structures, made of mostly board and foam, on July 28.

On July 31, ward committee member for housing and human settlements in Ward 68, Allan Holmes, together with various community leaders and residents, who were homeless and did not find a space to occupy in the temporary housing facility, gathered at the area to discuss a way forward.

The families said they were aware they are illegally occupying the area and will await a visit from authorities.
