Armed robbers sentenced to 15 years imprisonment

The men, aged 22 and 25, were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

TWO Wentworth men have been sentenced to 15 years behind bars for robbing an e-hailing driver and his friends.

The men aged 22 and 25, who were found guilty of armed robbery, were recently sentenced in the Durban Regional Court. They were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the Wentworth police spokesperson, said the e-hailing driver was seated in a vehicle with his friends, when they were approached by the men, in Austerville Drive, on September 18, 2021.

“The men, who were known to the victim, requested that he transport them to The Bluff. The men requested that he enter a pathway between two blocks of flats.

Upon reaching a dead end, the men pulled out a firearm and robbed the driver and his friends, thereafter fleeing,” he said.

Gumede said the men were arrested shortly thereafter.

“The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Simphiwe Mhlongo, who successfully opposed bail being granted, with the reason being that there were several e-hailing services related crimes in Wentworth.

“The men were remanded into prison custody until they were found guilty and sentenced recently,” he said.
