Merebank pageant finalist aims to empower communities

Juweria Moosa, who lives in Merebank, was selected as a finalist in the 2023 Zee TV Miss India South Africa pageant.

MODEL and pageant finalist, Juweria Moosa, is hoping to use the platform to empower and inspire others to always be positive and believe that they can achieve anything they put their mind to.

The 28-year-old, who lives in Merebank, was selected as a finalist in the 2023 Zee TV Miss India South Africa on June 25.

Moosa, an online teacher and beauty entrepreneur, said the pageant, which started 28 years ago as an innovative leadership programme, affords young women an opportunity to showcase their talent.

“The pageant promotes women empowerment. It entails grooming, modelling, fashion sense, etiquette training, speech and eloquence training and confidence building. It also introduces networking with fashion houses, companies, media and colleagues,” she said.

Moosa said being selected as a finalist was an acknowledgement of her efforts.

“It was a justification for the agony, the self-doubt, and the hard work that I put into getting selected. It has also given me validation and boosted my confidence,” she said.

Moosa, who won Supermodel KZN 2022, said she enjoyed modelling and watching pageants from a young age.

“I remember being seven-years-old and watching pageants such as Miss South Africa and Miss World on TV, and being drawn to the glamour and excitement of the event,” she said.

Moosa said being on stage can be a thrilling and empowering experience.

“It gives me an opportunity to showcase my poise, confidence, and talents in front of an audience, and to feel a sense of accomplishment.

“However, being in a pageant and on stage can also be a nerve-wracking experience, as I do feel pressure to perform well and make a good impression,” she said.

Moosa said if she wins, she intends on using the platform to positively impact others and communities through advocacy, outreach, mentorship, and fundraising.

“My goal is to be proactive, creative, and collaborative to make a real difference,” she said.

Moosa, a second year early childhood development student, said her hope for the future is to open a free educational centre in Merebank.

“The centre will be a place where students can obtain their NQF levels to create a healthy future for themselves.  I also want to be able to afford youth in my community career opportunities in the entertainment industry, such as acting and modeling,” she said.

Moosa said her advice to those that wish to pursue a passion is to speak to God first about their plans.

“When things seem impossible, believe in yourself and your abilities, as well as have confidence in God. Break your goals into smaller steps and create a plan to reach them. You must also ensure that you take care of your physical and mental health, which is essential for success. Make sure to exercise regularly, eat healthy, get enough sleep, and take time for self-care.

“Lastly, remember to use the platform to make a positive impact in your community, because they will stand firm with you and become your greatest supporters,” she said.
The pageant finale is set to take place at the Durban Jewish Hall, on December 2.
