Detective hailed as Wentworth man imprisoned for killing woman

Detective Sergeant Ntuthuko Cele, from the Wentworth police detective branch, has been hailed for his sterling investigations which resulted in the conviction and sentence handed down to Earl Sebastian Lottering.

A WENTWORTH police detective, Sergeant Ntuthuko Cele, has been hailed for his sterling investigations which resulted in the conviction and sentence handed down to a man for murder.

Earl Sebastian Lottering, 44, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the Wentworth police spokesperson said members of the Wentworth Police Vispol Unit received a call of assault GBH at a home in Croton Road, on the evening of 23 August in 2021.

“On arrival, members demanded entry, but were denied by the occupants. The members then proceeded to force the gate and door open. Upon entering they found a female with facial bruises and was having difficulty breathing. A second person, a male with slight bruises on the face, was found lying behind the door.

“The male was identified as a suspect who had brutally assaulted the female. The female, aged 58, was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspect was arrested and later charged for murder after the female died on August 31,” he said.

Gumede said the case docket was immediately assigned to Sergeant Cele, who then proceeded to gather the various statements required for trial.

“Detective Sergeant Cele worked tirelessly and committed himself to the matter. The detective branch commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Dale Duke, and station management would like to commend him for securing this conviction and ensuring that abuse and killing of women and children is dealt with harshly and perpetrators are brought to book. He is also commended for having excellent and professional communication skills while working with the court prosecutor,” he said.

Lottering will serve his sentence at Westville Prison.
