World Veterinary Day: Vet uses a modern approach to healing animals

Called MLS Laser Therapy, light is used to favour and accelerate the body’s natural healing process

WORLD Veterinary Day, held on the last Saturday of April (29 April, 2023) every year honours veterinarians all over the world who play a crucial part in healing and ensuring the well-being of our animals.

One such veterinarian is Dr Salochanee Saimen, owner of Animal Zone Pain Clinic who is the very first veterinarian in South Africa to offer alternative MLS laser treatments at her practice in Tongaat.

“We introduced this form of healing to the hospital in 2020 to provide higher quality patient care,” she said.

Explaining how it works in a nutshell Saimen said a laser beam is moved over the skin so that the light energy (photons) penetrates the tissue where it interacts with photochemical, photothermal and photomechanical effect, thus promoting healing.

The treatment is used to treat many conditions such as Alopecia (non-inflammatory), bacterial skin infections, contusions, hematomas, oedema and pain and inflammation to name a few.

“The testimonies speak for themselves,” she said.

“One of our patients was able to use his hindlimbs and walk again after receiving this therapy. Phoebe had such severe bite wounds that her owner thought we would have to amputate her leg but she healed beautifully without bandages,” added Saiman.

BENEFITS OF MLS
