Police warn of increase in house break-in’s on The Bluff

The most sought after items include electronic devices or systems and tools.

POLICE are encouraging neighbours to become each others eyes and ears after noticing that an increase in house break-in’s within the Brighton Beach policing area remains problematic, with The Bluff sector being the most affected.

Spokesperson for the Brighton Beach police station, Captain Louis le Roux, said neighbours are encouraged to forge a relationship with each other, which will build a stronger and safer community.

“Know your neighbours’ surname, contact details and their house number. If there is no visible number on the house or walls, ensure you are able to a give a proper description of the features of the home, for example, the colour, type of fencing and colour, or any distinct features of the home.

“Should your neighbours not be home, you will be able to alert them when you observe any suspicious activities within their premises. You will also be able to contact the SAPS 10111 emergency service on their behalf and request police assistance. Being united against the criminal elements within societies, neighbours can become support structures for each other when danger lurks,” Le Roux said.

According to police, house break-in’s are not limited to specific blocks, and are scattered throughout the entire sector, with incidents occurring at all times.

“Perpetrators operate generally in groups of two or more. Some operate on foot, while others predominantly utilise vehicles. The most sought after items include electronic devices or systems and tools.

“It is imperative that owners of electronic device or systems record the serial number numbers of these items. Store this information in a safe place. Upon perpetrators being apprehended and stolen items recovered, it will assist the police in linking perpetrators to scenes of crimes. Through community cooperation we can achieve more together,” added Le Roux.
