Fabulous Reads: Midas touch completes psychological thriller

Book review - The Golden Couple.

The Golden Couple, Greer Hendicks and Sarah Pekkanen, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781529056099

IF you are looking for a quick, yet satisfying psychological thriller, then look no further.

While the storyline might feel slow, I quickly breezed through the chapters.

The authors kept me hooked, not only with the main mystery but a few side puzzles.

The story unfolds as Avery Chambers, a therapist with a rather unconventional 10-step method (who has recently lost her licence due to her methods), is approached by Marissa and Matthew Bishop. The couple had recently suffered infidelity in their marriage.

This seems like a typical, easy-to-fix couple’s crisis. However, this book is all about deception. The characters will deceive each other, and the authors will deceive the reader, with a few clever red herrings.

I never knew who I could trust or root for, and I am not ashamed to say that I was unable to predict the ending.

I enjoyed the characters. They were nuanced and easy to empathise with.

However, Avery really stood out for me. Not only is she a fearless rebel, but I found it amusing how she shamelessly snoops and spies on her clients. While tough as nails, the authors also shows us a bit of her softer side, which really completed her character for me. Her character seemed to be in direct contrast to the Bishops, who strived for perfection.

Overall, the story was a fun read, although there are one or two unrealistic aspects, and while the ending caught me off guard, it felt rushed and anticlimactic. –  Mariclair Smit 3/5 stars
