Wentworth police aim to ensure community safety

The Vispol team conducted a vehicle checkpoint as well as stop and searches in the Merewent area.

A 25-year-old man was arrested and charged after he was found in possession of drugs during a stop and search by the Wentworth police Vispol unit team on Basil February Road in Merewent recently.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the police spokesperson, said the team, which was led by Vispol commander, Lieutenant Colonel Clive Myburg, had conducted a vehicle checkpoint as well as stop and searches in the area.

He said according to Lieutenant Colonel Myburg, the main purpose of the operation was to ensure that safety and security in the area is not compromised.

“This follows a number of shootings in the past weeks, with many lives lost. During the operation, vehicles were stopped and occupants searched. The focus was on the possession of illegal firearms and instruments like knives or other sharp objects which could be used in serious crimes such as murder and serious / grievous bodily harm. The members also searched burglary instruments,” he said.
