‘Quins cricket teams aim for top spot

The club will be hosting a sixers competition on April 1.

IT has been a busy and exciting time for some of the Harlequins Cricket Club teams who played matches over the  weekend.

The ‘Quins first team versed Umlazi in a first round Promotion T20 knockout competition, held at Harlequins sports grounds on March 26.

Ernest Kettle, the club’s senior advisor said, “Penetrative deliveries by right arm spinner, Keshav Govender, saw the demise of three Umlazi batsmen conceding 13 runs in 4 overs. He was no doubt the best bowler of the match, but was nevertheless aided by accurate and economical efforts by all three seam bowlers and the two backup spinners,” he said.

Kettle said the combined endeavour restricted Umlazi to just 88 runs, when rain intervention caused a premature interlude at the conclusion of the 19th over.

“Official umpires terminated the innings, when protective covers were placed over hessian on the pitch for 30 minutes until rain abated and the 19 over, reduced Harlequins innings commenced.

“Minor contributions by the ‘Quins top and middle order batsmen was the general norm of ‘Quins response, but it was the emphatic manner in which opening batsman, Kalvin Venter, combined a degree of circumspect with deserved aggression in which he ‘carried his bat’ being undefeated with 42 runs when ‘Quins surpassed Umlazi’s tally, earning victory by 6 wickets in 14 and a half overs,” he said.

Kettle said the team will advance to the second round of the 16 teams competition on April 2.

The ‘Quins second team took on Hillary Malvern in a T20 semi-final match held at Fairfield Park in Hillary on the same day.

“Hillary Malvern scored 147 runs in 20 overs. ‘Quins surpassed the total in a tightly contested match and thereby advanced to eThekwini Cricket Unions division 2, T20 final to be held on April 2,” he said.

Kettle said the success of the club during the past season is indescribable. “I say this as the first team has won the 16 team 50 over a side KZNCU promotion league and will participate in the premier league for the first time in almost three decades,” he said.

Kettle said the club will be hosting a sixers competition on April 1, and an awards ceremony on April 14.
