Meeting aims to shine spotlight on destruction of coastline

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance urges all those who eke out a livelihood from the coastline of KwaZulu Natal, as well as those who have a love and respect for our ocean and its marine life, to join the meeting.

FISHERFOLK, fish shop owners, ocean lovers and beachgoers are urged to join the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) at a community awareness meeting regarding the upstream petroleum resource development bill, on March 24, at 10:00.

The meeting will be held at the Ramsgate Lions Hall in Ramsgate South, Margate, and is aimed at uniting communities on the south coast, including Ramsgate, Margate, Port Shepstone, Port Edward, Port St Johns and surrounding areas to make the community aware about the bill.

SDCEA’s oil, gas and livelihoods project officer, Janeira Reddy, said, “We are calling for fishermen, fish shop owners, bait shop owners, surfers, all those that have a love for the ocean and care for its marine life, to join us at our awareness meeting.

“Our organisation will present information about the social and environmental effects of the upstream petroleum resource development bill. Attendees would be able to submit comments regarding the bill.

“We urge all those who eke out a livelihood from the coastline of KwaZulu Natal, as well as those who have a love and respect for our ocean and its marine life, to join us and listen to our message regarding the bill. We are better united and nothing can proceed with speed if we are all involved to stop the bill.”
