Police nab armed Wentworth teen

The teen was found in possession of a firearm, with three rounds of ammunition, concealed on his body.

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy who aroused the suspicions of police officers was caught with a firearm and ammunition in Reiger Road and is due to appear in the Child Justice Court.

KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said police have intensified operations in Wentworth due to ongoing violence between criminal groups in the area.

“The ongoing violence has claimed many lives over the years. Working with the community, police officers are placed strategically to deal with areas disposed to criminal elements.

“During the early hours of March 11, police were conducting observation on Reiger Road when they spotted a teenager who aroused their suspicions. They confronted the youth, and a search was conducted.

“He was found in possession of a firearm, with three rounds of ammunition, concealed on his body. He was immediately arrested for being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition,” added Gwala.

In a separate incident, police officers, who were conducting surveillance on a house at Barrackpur Road in Merebank, also witnessed suspicious behaviour at a vehicle parked outside the house.

“Noticing police, an unknown man jumped into the passenger seat, and the vehicle sped off. Police successfully traced the vehicle, and a search was conducted,” said Gwala.

The 45-year-old passenger was found in possession of 12 mandrax tablets. The suspect appeared before the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on March 13. The matter was remanded until March 20.
