Organisation appeals to community for bread donations

Widowed and Single Parents currently provides over 240 loaves of bread a week to those in need.

FOR more than four years, the non-profit organisation, Widowed and Single Parents (WASP), has dedicated their time to serving humanity, with one of their initiatives being providing over 240 loaves of bread a week to those in need. Brian Naidoo, the founder and chairperson of the organisation, said they are now facing one of their greatest challenges as their sponsor for bread is no longer able to assist them.

They are now appealing to the public, businesses or bakery owners to assist them so that they can continue with the initiative.

“Many of our recipients are dependent on that loaf of bread as it is possibly the only thing they have to eat for the day. We also distribute to the primary schools in our area, such as Merebank, Wentworth, Clairwood and The Bluff, who run a nutrition programme. The meals, which are mainly sandwiches are often the only one that these children have for the day. We cannot let any child go hungry.

“We also assist the elderly, unemployed and homeless with bread, among other things such as hot meals, water, and food hampers on a monthly basis. We are now appealing for any form of assistance. For those that would like to donate money, we have been granted Section 18A tax status with SARS, and donors will receive a donation certificate to be submitted with income taxes. We believe that together we can make the impossible, possible,” he said.

If you would like to assist the organisation, contact Naidoo on 084 474 6669.
