Organisation addresses truck related issues in south Durban

The members of the Trucking Coalition have committed to work jointly with all stakeholders who are strategically placed to address the immense concerns around trucking, congestion, signage, routing issues, accidents, and incidents in south Durban residential areas.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) hosted the first Trucking Coalition meeting on February 16, to address the consequences of the influx of trucks in the south Durban area. According to SDCEA’s environmental project officer, Shanice Firmin, residents have expressed their concerns related to the danger of trucks, whether it is congested and unsafe roads or the rise in horrific accidents, illicit parking, damage to infrastructure and residential homes.

“Those living in south Durban can all relate, therefore, we joined to collaborate with law enforcement, city officials, and relevant stakeholders to address the problems communities face.

“Livelihoods, homes, children, and people’s safety will remain threatened if we do not work together. Issues relating to trucks have been affecting residents of Clairwood, The Bluff, Merebank, Wentworth, Umbilo, Glenwood, Seaview, Chatsworth, and Isipingo.

“We are calling for enforced regulation of trucking activities, a well-monitored and controlled system to protect the rights of all those directly or indirectly affected by trucking and port logistics, as well as investment in sustainable rail and multimodal hubs, such as Cato Ridge Dry Port,” Firmin added.

Formalisation of approved trucking routes and no-go areas were also debated and Firmin said she hoped there would be a way forward in addressing these issues with better developments and more sustainability.

“Residents representing communities situated in and around the Durban Port also gave feedback during the meeting. We also had representation from the city, eThekwini Transport Authority, and metro police engage with us. The members of the Trucking Coalition have committed to work jointly with all stakeholders who are strategically placed to address the immense concerns around trucking, congestion, signage, routing issues, accidents, and incidents in our residential areas.

“We have an online reporting tool that will be redesigned to assist communities in effectively reporting their concerns that will be linked to enforcement teams for further investigation. Our team will meet quarterly to engage and provide feedback to all members on progress.”
