Wentworth teen chases musical dream

Keana Carla Scheepers,17, has featured in her first song, Let Me Love You.

FROM singing in the shower as a child to officially featuring in her first song, Keana Carla Scheepers, is on the path to achieving her dream of breaking into the music industry.

Scheepers, 17, of Wentworth, featured alongside Tayo the Groovist on the single, Let Me Love You, by local artist, Poetic Hustler. The song recently premiered on YouTube.

“Poetic Hustler approached me with an opportunity to feature in his song, which I could not turn down, even though it was quite nerve-wrecking. I am so grateful for that and thank him for giving me a chance to make a song with him.

“So far the response, in terms of views and likes, has been very good and I am proud of our progress. I am even more excited now to see what the future holds,” she said.

Scheepers, who matriculated last year from Fairvale Secondary School, said she was bitten by the singing bug at a young age.

“I always loved singing as a little girl. My parents, who realised that I actually had an amazing voice, encouraged me to pursue my dreams of breaking into the music industry. I would initially sing at every family function. When I was 13-years-old, I entered my first competition, Galleria’s Got Talent, in 2018. I had only made it to the semi-finals, but I did not give up and entered the Westwood Mall singing competition at the end of 2019.

“Unfortunately, the competition couldn’t continue due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But, I have continued to post my videos on various social media platforms to get exposure,” she said.

Scheepers, whose favourite music genre is RnB, said she found singing to be therapeutic.

“When I sing I feel as if I am in another world, one that is peaceful. I also feel all my problems fade away. Singing also makes others happy and that is most important to me. My hope is to positively touch millions of peoples lives one day,” she said.

Scheepers, who inspired by the late legendary American singer, Whitney Houston, said her future goal was to pursue her dream of becoming a professional singer.

“I have decided to use this year to focus on making music and getting noticed in the industry. It is my absolute true passion. I also hope to make my parents proud, as they have never given up on me despite the many challenges we have faced. I would like to move my family out of Wentworth and give my sisters a better life,” she said.

Scheepers said her message to the youth is to never give up.

“I have always lived by the motto, ‘anything is possible if you believe in yourself’. I also want to encourage them to put God first and in everything that they do, because I would not be where I am today without his grace. They should also always remember that it is never too late to pursue their dreams or goals,” she said.
