New library on the cards for Wentworth community

The Abbaquar San Dream Centre says whilst there are neighboring libraries but they are not easily accessible.

HOPING to empower the youth of Wentworth for a better future, the Abbaquar San Dream Centre, are hoping to open a multi-faceted library at the centre’s premises (old Silvertree Hall)in Wentworth. Cheiftess Olivia Jones, the chairperson of the non-profit organisation said while there were other libraries in the surrounding areas, it was not easily accessible.

“We had seen a need for a library on this side of Wentworth as it is not safe for the children to walk to Austerville library or the Merebank library due to the ongoing gang violence and other crimes in the area. The library will however be accessible to everyone in the community,” she said.

Jones said they have partnered with Gcina Hlophe, an author, poet and story-teller, and Mlungisi Maestro Mncibi, an official from the eThekwini Department of Human Capital to assist with the project.

“We are truly grateful for their support. Gcina, who is driving this initiative will be hosting story-telling sessions, which will be highly beneficial for the children, while Mlungisi  has informed us that the department will be sponsoring us a few computers and free WIFI, so this will allow the children to do research for their projects.
“We also have many other plans in the pipeline, such as a video game section, however, the children will have to join the library and have read at least two books before they can play. Our goal is get more children reading and not playing on the streets, putting their lives at risk,” she said.

Senior Chief Mervyn Damos, who is also involved in the project, said he recalls visiting the initial library at the hall more than 20 years ago.

“I used to spend my time as a child in the library, reading book after book. That is what I wish to see the children do now. They need to understand that reading gives them knowledge, and knowledge will give them power to achieve any success they desire. I want to see more doctors, lawyers and all sorts of professionals emerge from our community which has been plagued by violence over the years.

“We urge business owners or anyone that wants to help make a change in the lives of our children to help us get this library off the ground. We still need various items such as paint, tiles shelves, desks, printers and more books, among other items. We have since collected hundreds of books so far, but we want to offer a variety for everyone, from young to old. We will appreciate any help received,” he said.
