BRIGHTON Beach police are urging business-owners to be on guard as there has been an influx of robberies in the area recently.
Captain Louise le Roux, the Brighton Beach police spokesperson, said the robberies mainly occurred during 20:00 and 04:00.

“However, there have been sporadic incidents during the day. Preparators are predominantly armed with firearms, knives or both. They arrive on foot the majority of the time and jump over walls, gates or fences to gain entry. Upon overpowering the guard, they will allow for fellow perpetrators to gain entry,” she said.
Le Roux said the most sought after items taken are vehicle and truck tyres, rims, mobile devices, electronic devices and cash.
“In some incidents the security will be robbed of their mobile devices, upon being tied up,” she said.
Le Roux has provided some guidelines that can help business owners to minimise robberies.
- When employing static guards, seek the services of a security company that is PSIRA accredited.
- Ensure that wire fencing is secure. Ensure that damaged areas of the fencing are repaired without delay. Place additional security measures on the crossbar of wire fencing such as barb wire.
- Ensure sufficient lighting after hours throughout the entire premises.
- Ensure that foot patrols are conducted hourly by security guards.
- Install an alarm system which includes sensor or laser detection.
- Install surveillance cameras.
- Install a panic alarm system inside the business premises as well as inside the security boom. It is also recommended that roaming guards be issued with a mobile panic alarm.
- A Patrol dog is also recommended. Ensure that a notice is placed on the gate and walls of your premises indicating that a dog is on guard and patrol, as a public warning.
- Staffing/security officials must be instructed not to challenge perpetrators. Comply with their demands, and don’t make any sudden moves.
Le Roux added that It is imperative that staffing and security officials are informed not to interfere with the crime scene, such as not to disturb physical evidence, as it can hamper police investigation.
