Help Bluff golfer girl get to compete in international championship

In a bid to assist her in raising the money, The Bluff Golf Club, of which she is a member, will be hosting a golf day at the Bluff National Golf Park on February 24.

FOR 10-year-old Abigail Thambiran, being invited to compete at the 2023 Champion of Champions, a world championship event for junior golfers, is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The event is set to take place at the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland from July 25 to 27.

However, Abigail, who resides on The Bluff, has to raise over R120 000 which will be used to cover various costs such as travel, meals and practice rounds, among others. In a bid to assist her in raising the money, The Bluff Golf Club, of which she is a member, will be hosting a golf day at the Bluff National Golf Park on February 24.

Sean Thambiran, her father, said Abigail was invited to attend after she won in the girls U10 category at the 2022 Junior African Championship. The Grade 5 learner at St Henry’s Marist College, competed against junior golfers from 52 countries around the world.

Among her other accolades, she also won at the 2018 and 2021 Junior African Championship, as well as took first place in the international PeeWee Swing Contest. Thambiran said Abigail’s passion for playing golf started at age of three.

“We live near the golf course and during a visit I noticed that she took an interest in it, and decided to give it a try just for her to have fun. I noticed that she had great hand-eye coordination and a natural swing. I bought her a set of golf clubs and that is when her journey began,” he said.

Thambiran said Abigail, whose role-model is the legendary Tiger Woods, hopes to inspire other young girls to play sport.

“She always says that she hopes she can inspire other girls to get involved in sport, not only golf, but to find a sport that they like and pursue it. She believes that it builds good character and brings a sense of fulfilment in ones life,” he said.

Thambiran added that he and his wife, Natalie, were proud of her achievements. “She is still developing and learning every day, but she loves playing golf, so we will nurture and support her passion,” he said.
