Young Merebank DJ turns up the heat on the dance floor

Naidoo, who also owns a mobile disco, Disco TNT, said her role models were her parents and a fellow DJ.

FROM being a law student by day, to spinning the decks at night, at just 18-years-old, Thiara Naidoo is living her dream. Naidoo, from Merebank, said she is hoping to make her mark in the entertainment industry.

As a stepping stone to fulfilling her dream, she participated in her first competition and walked away as the winner in the battle of the DJs 2022 competition, hosted by Oriental Lighting at the Chatsworth Centre, recently.
Naidoo, who is known as DJ Law-T, said at first she did not think she would win as it was a male-dominated competition.

“I was the only female there which was quite nerve-wrecking, but my family and friends motivated me. It was when I made it to the finals that I was ecstatic and even more motivated to win.
“I practiced everyday until I won the competition. I was so excited especially as all my hard work paid off.
“I am now determined to grow my career as a DJ, and other more competitions, both national and international,” she said.

Naidoo, who is also a second-year law student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said her passion for music started at a young age.

“I was also inspired by my dad, who always spoke about how he wanted to be a DJ from a young age. In September last year, I decided to take the leap and start learning, thankfully I had the guidance of other DJs.
“The first event I played at was a family fun day in October. It was a mind-blowing experience and it just made me want to keep playing.
“Since then, I have played at several other events. When I play I am taken on a musical journey and feel extremely happy when people enjoy the music. It is like an adrenalin rush,” she said.

Naidoo, who is a resident DJ at Cuba Lounge Gateway and plays on Friday and Saturday nights, said she is an open format DJ. “I play a mixture of music genres such as 80s, 90s, Amapiano, Electronic dance music (EDM) and bhangra. I will be making my own remixes soon,” she said.

Naidoo, who also owns a mobile disco, Disco TNT, said her role models were her parents and a fellow DJ.
“My parents always motivate and support me. I am also inspired by Ryan the DJ, and hope to be like him and enter the world’s largest global DJ competition, Redbull 3 style championship, and win it,” she said.

Naidoo said while being a young female in the industry is difficult, but through hard work and perseverance, a person can accomplish anything. “I lived by my motto, ‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it’. My advice to other aspiring DJs, especially young women, is to always follow your dreams.
“You can achieve anything you put your mind to, but you must have passion and love for everything you do,” she said.
