Residents enjoy benefits of lawn bowls

The sport also allows for an enhanced mental well-being, and social involvement and support.

THE WENTWORTH Bowling Club invites residents to try their hand at lawn bowls, a low-impact, therapeutic sport that has many health benefits. The simplicity of the game and the low-impact exercise it involves makes it a popular sport in many countries, and allows for friends and family to play together.

Club president, Cheryl Waterman, said lawn bowls can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age, gender or fitness level.

“There are opportunities to join the club committee or volunteer in the day-to-day running of the club. There is often socialising involved and you don’t have to be competitive to play.

“Wear a pedometer and you’ll be surprised how much ground you walk in one game of bowls. Some players report walking over five kilometres while playing. Above the physical rewards, the sport can improve your social life and contribute to your all-round happiness and well-being. Whether you are 80 or 90-years-old, novice or experienced, lawn bowls is a great game for people of all ages and physical mobility,” Waterman said.

Benefits of lawn bowls include improved fitness, coordination and concentration, as well as increased confidence and self esteem.

The sport also allows for an enhanced mental well-being, and social involvement and support.
To participate, contact the club’s vice president, Simon Garland, on 082 895 0896 or Denzil Lewis on 074 904 4609.
