Councillor highlights plight of Wentworth residents

Ward 68 councillor, Aubrey Snyman wants to turn thing around this year.

IN AN effort to turn things around for Ward 68, councillor Aubrey Snyman, is determined to highlight the challenges and circumstances this year. Beginning with the most serious issue of the continuous gun and gang violence in the Wentworth area, Snyman said he was dismayed to announce that nothing has changed as rampant shootings continue.

“The shootings have not stopped from 2022 and have been ongoing. This is very sad as our community fears for their lives and innocent people are caught in the crossfire. The situation is definitely unacceptable. Our ward has experienced many challenges for years in terms of the escalating drug issue, unemployment, overcrowding in small homes, illegal dumping and poor services delivery from the relevant municipal departments.

“With drugs being a major problem, which contributes to the various social ills the community faces, the police need to increase their resources and their presence in the different hotspot areas which police are well aware off. By executing searches and getting involved in checking for illegal substances, drugs and weapons in these areas, will contribute to cleaning the area if its rot,” said Snyman.

“Unemployment is also what we are hoping will decrease once more jobs are created. This will enable unemployed residents to find jobs and will elevate some of the challenges our youth are faced with of being unemployed.

“The Department of Human Settlements will be engaged to demolish the one-bedroom units in Tuin, Woodville and Wolraad roads and according to a meeting held with members of the community and the department, the two-bedroom units which were promised must be built. The department is also planning to build extra units, which will reduce the overcrowding in households.

“Another problem I plan on tackling full force is illegal dumping. It has become very unhygienic and unhealthy for the residents and people need to take responsibility by reporting the offenders to law enforcement officers. When residents report these culprits, people will think twice before committing the offense once an example is set. Culprits will be prosecuted and a fine of R5 000 has to be paid when found guilty.

“I am aware of the sewer blockages due to aging infrastructures are posing a health hazard and needs to be fixed. Faulty street lights, which contribute to the increase in crime and violence, will be highlighted as the current municipal services are poor and in need of urgent attention. I believe if these issues are addressed with utmost urgency, the community will see a positive spin-off in ward 68,” added Snyman.
