Organisation urges community to assist with school shoes drive

Sheldon Francis, the founder of the organisation, said for the past seven years, they have collected more than 300 pairs of shoes each year.

HOPING to help underprivileged youth have a good start to the new school year, the non-profit organisation, Children Have a Dream (CHAD), appeals to the community to assist them with their annual school shoe drive.
The organisation, which is volunteer-based, runs programmes within schools addressing various issues that youth are faced with such as drug abuse, violence, depression and many other social ills.

Sheldon Francis, the founder of the organisation, said for the past seven years, they have collected more than 300 pairs of shoes each year. He said they collected 325 shoes last year, and are hoping to exceed that number.

“We work very close with underprivileged children from within the eThekwini district including Wentworth and The Bluff. We want to give a child an opportunity to attend school with a brand new pair of shoes, so they can throw away their torn and under-sized shoes.

“What we found is that most children drop out of school because of the embarrassment of not having a clean and good uniform, while others turn to joining gangs for support, selling drugs as well as young girls engaging in bad activities for money to see to their basic needs. We now appeal to the public and businesses to help us keep these child in school so they can have a brighter future,” he said.

If you would like to assist, call or WhatsApp Francis on 067 127 0286.
