Wentworth residents to hand over memorandum for police to address gang violence

eThekwini South Youth in Business urges residents to support the handover of the memorandum to the Wentworth police on January 11, in an appeal to fight drug-dealing and gang violence.

NON-PROFIT organisation eThekwini South Youth in Business (ESYIB) is encouraging residents who are irate about the ongoing gang violence in the Wentworth area to join them in handing a memorandum to Wentworth police on January 11.

Concerned that the age group of drug abuse and gang violence have been getting lower in recent years, with little change in terms of policing, ESYIB chairperson Celeste King said residents can join forces to voice their concerns when the memorandum is handed over.

The memorandum will request police minister Bheki Cele and the Provincial Task Team to respond to the call of action.

“We need an increase in visible policing in drug-related activity hotspots and more successful arrests related to known drug dealers and corrupt officers.

“An investigation into corrupt officers within the Wentworth police station needs to be conducted, and the community needs more random drug-combating campaigns and operations with the use of surrounding community police station resources and officers.

“We need the implementation of a safe communication setup between the Wentworth residents and Wentworth police officers for the reporting of people breaking the law or conducting activities that are drug, murder or corruption-related.

“Any type of firecracker also needs to be banned in the community of Wentworth,” said King.

She added that due to the seriousness of the violence in Wentworth, the memorandum demands a reply within two days of handover.

Residents who wish to join the handover of the memorandum to Wentworth police station commander Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, can meet at Wentworth police station at 08:30 on January 11.
