Motorists urged to put road safety first this festive season

Brighton Beach police, together with their partners in policing, conducted an educational campaign at 2 malls in The Bluff recently on road safety – in preparation for the festive season.

HOPING to put an emphasis on road safety over the festive season, the Brighton Beach police, together with various policing stakeholders, embarked on an integrated public and educational initiative at the Bluff Towers Mall and Bluff Hillside Mall recently.

Captain Louise le Roux, the Brighton Beach spokesperson said an Arrive Alive information guide, which she researched and developed, was distributed to patrons at the malls.

She said the objective of the initiative was to support the national initiative to encourage responsible driving during the festive season while reducing road fatalities.

The initiative was spearheaded by Detective Captain Joanna Baldeo from the Brighton Beach Detective Services.

“During this period, an influx of visitors is expected, with our beaches and malls being points of attraction. This results in an increase of road users, which includes pedestrians, and those operating trucks, motor vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles.”

Le Roux said the information guide includes the general duties of a driver and passengers when occupying a mode of transport on a public road, duties of pedestrians, use of seatbelts and child constraints, prohibition on the use of communication devices while driving, and the alcohol effect.

“Through this collaboration, the Brighton Beach police, together with its partners in policing, achieved their strategic objective, which was encouraging responsible road-use behaviour while hosting an initiative that had educational value,” she said.

Le Roux said the information guide also promotes the reporting of bad driving, unsafe vehicles, and reckless and negligent driver behaviour, including fraud and corruption issues related to the traffic sphere.
