Police chase and arrest Wentworth man with drugs and counterfeit money

The suspect was arrested and detained for two counts, including possession of mandrax and possession of counterfeit notes. The accused was charged and appeared in Wentworth Magistrate’s Court.

A 42-YEAR-OLD man who was arrested for being in possession of drugs and counterfeit money by members of the Wentworth police Vispol team after a high-speed chase from Wentworth to Merebank was released on bail.

The man, who evaded police after they attempted to conduct a stop and search on his vehicle, appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on December 12 and was granted bail of R1 500.

According to communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede, officers were patrolling the area on December 2, conducting stops and searches when they spotted an unknown vehicle exiting Lansdowne Road.

“The driver, upon seeing the police vehicle, sped off towards the Merebank area. The officers gave chase and eventually managed to stop the vehicle along Punjab Circle. Upon searching the driver and vehicle, 31 grey tablets suspected to be mandrax and counterfeit notes in a packet, totaling R2 000, were found,” said Gumede.

The suspect was arrested and detained for two counts, including possession of mandrax and possession of counterfeit notes.

Station commander of the Wentworth police station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, said drugs are the main contributor to crime, gender-based violence and burglaries, among other crimes.

“Police will continuously conduct stops and searches in the Merewent area to eradicate drugs. Youth are warned to stay away from drug-related activities and urged to show respect to parents and focus on good values, which parents are trying to instill on them,” said Mtshali.
