Crime fighters donate visibility belts to primary school learners

This school was chosen as it has a lot of young learners, many of which walk to and from school.

AIMED at keeping learners safe and visible, the Montwood Community Policing Sub Forum (CPSF) recently donated 470 reflective belts to Montclair Junior Primary School.

Kevin Govender, the chairperson of the sub forum, which was formed earlier this year, said the donation was one of their initial projects.

The sub forum is one of three sectors of the Montclair Community Policing Forum (CPF).

“We partnered with Jonsson Workwear, and they sponsored the belts. We chose this school as it has very young learners, many of which walk to and from school. We are hoping that the belts create more visibility of the children, which will help ensure their safety,” he said.

Sergeant Noma Mnguni, a social and crime prevention coordinator at the Montclair police station, also gave a talk on safety. She urged the learners to be more wary of their surroundings while walking and not to talk or get into a car with a stranger.

“I also told the children that police officers are their friends and they should not be afraid to ask for help if they are in danger. It was a great success as the learners listened and now know that they can call on the police if they are in danger,” she said.

Julie Jackson, the school’s principal, said she was grateful that the CPSF had selected their school.

“This is a huge plus for the school, especially for our little ones. We thank the CPSF for reaching out to us. It was a pleasant surprise, which will definitely have a great impact on the children’s lives. It is also great seeing the CPSF so active in the community, especially now as there has been a spate of crime in the area, and even outside the schools. We also thank the Montclair police for the safety talk,” she said.
