Ongoing stink for Finnemore residents

"The municipality seriously needs to start upping their game. It has also been brought to my attention that the sewerage overflow is now being diverted into the storm water drains."

RESIDENTS from Finnemore Place in the Bluff are frustrated about the stench they have had to endure over the past five years, due to the ongoing sewer related issues which forced them to keep their windows and doors closed.

Feeling helpless after lodging numerous complaints relating to backed-up sewage, Ian Howes, said he was shocked to learn that after numerous attempts to clear the blockage and rectify the problem, the issue persists.

“There are so many areas in Finnemore Place which were dug up in the last year alone, but the problem has not been resolved. We close our doors and windows, despite the heat, because we cannot bear the smell. The sewage, which lies dormant in the underground pipes, also attracts flies and maggots, which creates a health hazard for residents in the vicinity,” added Howes.

Another resident, Vaughn Levin, said five years was a long time for residents to be lodging complaints without proper solutions.

“The municipality has attended to the ongoing problems several times, but it never has been sorted out. The smell over the past few weeks has been so horrendous that many households were forced to close all windows and doors in an attempt to keep the smell out. We cannot be expected to live in an environment hazardous to one’s health.

“The municipality seriously needs to start upping their game. It has also been brought to my attention that the sewerage overflow is now being diverted into the storm water drains.

“This leads directly into the beach, which is totally unacceptable. How can we say that beaches are safe for swimming, when there is clear evidence that the sewer is being spewed out into the very same ocean,” said Levin.
