Frustration mounts as Montclair residents without power for two days

Cable theft and slow responses in replacing and repairing the connection have caused residents to express their frustrations on social media.

FOR almost two days, some Montclair residents have been left without electricity after cables were stolen from the Glen and Pemberton Road Substation on Tuesday morning.
Gavin Hegter, the Ward 64 councillor, said a contractor had been sent out to check the substation on Wednesday night, and confirmed that the cables were stolen.
“They further advised that they are going to try to get cables so repairs can start.”
Hegter said he has been communication with the head of department and have been assured that the fault will be repaired today.
“Sadly, we are still experiencing huge backlogs in the department due to the cut in overtime payments.”
Some residents have taken to social media to express their frustration over the delay in the electricity being restored. Here is what some of them said:
Trevor Verity said, “Electricity is a basic essential that is supplied by the government to the people who pay rates and taxes… Here is the question – who would be held responsible had a person died due to waiting for the following day for the repair? Crime is out of control, and with no alarms…”
Sherry Badenhorst said, “This is absolutely ridiculous. So everything in the fridges and freezers is useless. What a waste of hard-earned money. Absolutely disgusting.”
