Police clampdown on hotspot areas in Merewent

Patrols in the Wentworth, Treasure Beach and Navy areas resulted in the operation yielding positive results.

IN AN effort to curb the ongoing violence in the Wentworth area, members from Wentworth police stations Vispol team conducted an operation at various hotspots in the Merewent area on September 17.

Police officers were briefed about hotspot areas before the operation.

Deployed to different hotspots under the command of station commander of the Wentworth police station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, the operation served to ensure that problematic crimes were dealt with and to ensure safety of all residents in the community.
“A parade was held to start the operation and Mtshali addressed the officers and the stations Vispol commander, Lieutenant Colonel CA Myburg, highlighted issues of crime in the area. The patrols were then conducted in hotspot areas, with stop and searches on persons and vehicles.

Stops and searches were also conducted.

“Officers searched for illegal firearms, drugs, and any other dangerous weapons which can be used to cause harm or injure another person. Suspicious vehicles and occupants searches were also conducted. Members proceeded to Natraj Shopping Centre where stops and searches were also conducted, as well as a walk through the centre to create police visibility,” Gumede said.

Mtshali said, “Wentworth police are committed to the fight against crime in Merewent. We will ensure that crime is dealt with and that the community lives in peace. We must join to fight crime together.”
