TWO minors were arrested for robbery with a knife after they accosted a 33-year-old woman while she was walking from a shop in Merebank.
According to Wentworth police, the woman, who was with her daughter at the time, was talking to her husband on her cellphone when she noticed two young boys walking past her.
Communications officer of the Wentworth police, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said when the woman finished her phone call, the two young boys approached her.
“She was carrying her child at the time. One of the suspects pulled out a knife and held it in his hand and demanding her cellphone. He threatened to stab her. The other suspect grabbed the cellphone out of her hand and both suspects ran down towards Juggernaut Road. The complainant screamed for assistance. At this stage, both suspects were running away together. Three men rushed to help the woman and chased the suspects. One of them was arrested and found in possession of the woman’s cellphone. The second suspect was arrested by two security officers from Alpha Alarms. He was found in possession of a knife. The complainant had positively identified both suspects. Her cellphone was recovered. A case of robbery was opened at the station and suspects were detained,” said Mbuso.

Station commander of the Wentworth police, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, commended the brave residents as well as the two security officers for their quick assistance and the arrest of the suspects.
“We encourage the community to assist the police in fighting crime and to report any suspicious activities taking place in our community. We also urge residents to report to work with community policing forum structures, which work with police in the fight against crime,” said Mtshali.
