Police aim to educate Clairwood community about gun violence

Five hundred brochures, which explain the extent of the effects of gun violence, as well as how the Domestic Violence Act, and the Firearms Control Act protects victims against violence. were handed out to residents of the various informal settlements in the area.

HOPING to create awareness and combat gun violence, the Brighton Beach police, together with security companies recently embarked on a foot-beat in Clairwood.

Captain Louise le Roux, the Brighton Beach police station spokesperson, said 500 brochures were handed out to residents of the La Lucia, Izipokini, Umhlanga, Pine Road, and Sirkuma Reddy Road informal settlements.

She said the brochure explained the extent of the effects of gun violence, as well as how the Domestic Violence Act, and the Firearms Control Act protects victims against violence.

“The brochure provides steps that can be taken when exposed to gun violence within the home environment, while also explaining under which circumstances a lawful gun owner can be declared unfit to be in possession of a firearm.

“There is also information provided on how parents can protect their children against gun violence, and the steps a child can take if they come into contact with a firearm or a person wielding a firearm,” she said.

Le Roux said the project which was spearheaded by Brighton Beach Clairwood Sector Commander, Sergeant Lethukuthula Khathi, was in partnership with the KZN Department of Community Safety and Liaison, the Clairwood CPF Sub-Forum, Yin Yang Tactical, and Blue Security.

“The members conducted a foot-beat through the informal settlements, where they knocked on the residents’ doors and then dropped off a brochure. We thank all role players for their active participation and for supporting the police to achieve its strategic objectives.

“The objectives of the collaboration were to strengthen the working relationships with key role players in the fight against crime, to foster community cooperation, create high levels of visibility, and raise awareness on crime trends. Together we can achieve more,” she said.
