Bluff lads to play with Sharks youth club

The boys, aged between 12 and 15, will be competing with the club in an interprovincial tour, which will be held in Heidelberg, Gauteng from October 1 to 9.

FIVE rugby stars from the Harlequins Rugby Club in Bluff, have been selected to join the Sharks Youth Club.

The boys are now looking forward to competing with the club in an interprovincial tour, which will be held in Heidelberg, Gauteng from October 1 to 9.

The boys, aged between 12 and 15, will be representing the club in both the U13 and U15 age groups.

Dominique Smuts, the secretary of the Harlequins Rugby Club, said the boys were selected during trials that were held at Harlequins Sports Club in August.

“The trials were held on three different days and there were many players from various clubs. There were five sporting unions who were present and then did the selection. We were informed recently that our boys had made the club and will be a part of the tour.

“The boys are proud and excited as it will also be the first time they will be playing for the Sharks youth club. Our club is also very proud of the boys. Most of them started playing rugby from the age of seven, and have put in a lot of hard work and dedication into their training. They are now reaping the rewards,” she said.

Smuts said each player was tasked to raise funds to make it to the provincial tour, which cost about R9 000 each.

“We don’t receive any funding, so the boys have to depend on their parents or the generosity of sponsors. They are also trying to raise money through various initiatives such as raffles. They are still trying to raise money and we would appreciate any help for the boys,” she said.
