Citizens arrest leads to armed robbers 12 year conviction

The violent robbery was witnessed by residents, who gave chase thereafter, apprehending the accused.

RESIDENTS of Montclair who made a citizens arrest after they witnessed a man stabbing and robbing a 43-year-old man can take a bow for assisting police in ensuring a conviction.

Sean Antony Myburgh was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for aggravated robbery after he appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court.

Montclair police station commander, Colonel Trevor Small, commended Montclair detectives who ensured the incarceration of the accused.

Spokesperson for the Montclair police station, Captain Cheryl Pillay, said on July 15, a man was walking along Roland Chapman Road when he was accosted by Myburgh, who threatened him with a knife.

“Myburgh stabbed the victim after he refused to hand over his personal belongings. This violent act was witnessed by residents, who gave chase thereafter, apprehending the accused. Police recovered the victims personal belongings, which was found in Myburgh’s possession,” added Pillay.

Small commended Detective Sergeant Nosihle Nene for her commitment and dedication towards ensuring that hardened criminals are kept in correctional facilities.

“Police are grateful for the vigilance of the community, who came to aid of the victim, thereby ensuring the apprehension of the accused. The sterling investigation by Nene is lauded,” Small added.
