Bluff residents urged to beware of swine flu

Bluff general practitioner Dr Fathima (FB) Khan confirmed that she has treated a host of patients with swine flu.

WITH flu season nearing its end, residents are urged to be aware of the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, which is reportedly circulating.

The respiratory disease is caused by a particular influenza virus strain, and according to the Department of Health, the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus is now a seasonal influenza virus that co-circulates with other seasonal viruses.

Bluff general practitioner Dr Fathima (FB) Khan confirmed that she has treated a host of patients with swine flu and says there is only a short window period for anti-viral medication to minimise symptoms.

The virus, which appeared for the first time in 2009, causing a global influenza pandemic similar to COVID-19, can be prevented by basic hygiene measures such as sneezing into a tissue and disposing of it safely, washing hands regularly with soap and water, avoiding contact with sick people, and staying at home when developing influenza-like symptoms to avoid infecting others.

Khan said while symptoms are similar to the usual flu, with fever, a cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue, some residents have more severe symptoms than with usual influenza. She urges residents to seek early medical treatment if flu-like symptoms worsen rapidly.

5 ways to avoid catching swine flu:

1. Avoid touching your mouth and nose.
2. Clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, or sanitise on a regular basis.
3. Avoid close contact with people who might be ill.
4. Reduce the time spent in crowded areas.
5. Improve airflow in your living space by opening windows or doors if it is safe to do so.
