Siblings compete in junior surf cast championships

The Bluff anglers competed against juniors from across the country.

SIBLINGS, Micheal and Jade Potgieter, were both awarded Mpumalanga provincial colours at the closing ceremony of the first SASAA Junior Surf Cast National Championships.

The Bluff anglers competed against juniors from across the country from August 6 to 8, at Durban Beachwood Mangroves. The pair were proud to follow in the footsteps of their father, Theo Potgieter, who flies the surf casting flag high by managing the South African Protea Ladies Surf Casting team.

With tough competition, all anglers at the event were assisted by Theo, as well as some of South Africa’s top Protea anglers, including Viloshan Naicker, Pierre Viljoen, Lindor Mdletshe, Zahed Moosa and Avash Juggernath.

Michael and Jade competed in three categories which were assisted division, U16 and U21.
“We could not have asked for better fishing conditions, which exposed us to an all-round type of fishing with weather that was both sunny and hot. There were flat sea conditions on day one to rain on day two, with windy conditions on day three. In total, there were 353 fish caught in three days between the anglers. This facet tried and tested every part of us from busy times with plenty fish coming out to times when it went very quiet and we had to rethink strategies to try find the bite,” said the siblings.
The closing ceremony was held at Kloof High School on the evening of August 8.

Their proud dad said, “We would like to thank Kloof High School for hosting the opening and closing ceremony, as well as Avash Juggernath, convener of the tournament from the KZNCAU province. We also thank sponsors from Bluff, as well as Chint Electric and Alpha and Omega Investments for sponsoring the junior team to be able to compete in the prestigious event.”
The junior nationals will be held every year in different provinces along the coastline. If you would like to get involved or for more information, contact Theo on 079 682 2450.
