Armed response officer shot, saved by bulletproof vest

An armed response officer sustained a gunshot wound to the chest during a carjacking earlier today.

A 46-year-old armed response officer was shot by armed robbers during a carjacking on Bluff Road earlier today.

Kyle van Reenen, spokesperson for Emer-G-Med, said their paramedics, together with ALS Medical Services, arrived on the scene to find the officer had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

“He also had a shrapnel wound to the left arm. Luckily, the man was wearing a bulletproof vest, which prevented the bullet from penetrating the chest area, ultimately saving his life. He was treated and stabilised for moderate injuries before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care,” he said.

Van Reenen said reports from the scene were that a carjacking had occurred.

“It is believed that the officer came down the road and encountered an armed gang, who opened fire on his vehicle with a high-calibre rifle and numerous pistols.

“A bystander’s vehicle was also struck in the incident, damaging the tyres. No other injuries were reported. The police were in attendance and will be conducting the necessary investigation,” he said.

Captain Louise le Roux, Brighton Beach police spokesperson, said a case of carjacking and attempted murder is being investigated.
