THE metro police unit stationed at the Wentworth Police Station successfully apprehended two suspects believed to be members of a notorious gang that breaks into people’s homes in the Wentworth policing precinct.

The members of the street crime unit arrested the two suspects while they were allegedly selling stolen goods near the taxi rank on Lansdowne Road in Wentworth. The police recovered a gas stove, bicycle, a bag containing boots and electrical appliances.
Captain Greg Beavon of the street crime unit said the members were patrolling in the Durban South Basin area when they spotted the suspects carrying suspected stolen goods.
“The police approached them and asked about the goods they were carrying. Upon further questioning, they did not provide satisfactory answers and were apprehended and taken to the Wentworth Police Station.
“When we checked their criminal records, we found that they had previous convictions for house burglary and theft. They were charged and appeared at the Wentworth District Court,” said Beavon.
Beavon said the team has been working hard over the past four years to ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
“Since we [the metro police] opened an office at the Wentworth Police Station, we have managed to make great strides in arresting wanted suspects. We recently arrested another suspect for the possession of a stolen bakkie tailgate in Jacobs.
“We want to return these recovered items to the owners. We urge the public who have been victims of house break-ins and theft to come forward,” he added.
The suspects are expected to make their second appearance in court this week.
